"Thanks for braving the shopping centre with me, Harry," Hermione said as they fell into step with the crowd. "I know the after-Christmas sales are the worst time to come, but I wanted to get this over with."
"I don't mind," he said. "Actually, it's good to get away from the Weasleys for a bit."
Hermione nodded. Harry had recently broken up with Ginny, and though he was still Ron's best friend and Molly and Arthur loved him like a son, she knew he felt the atmosphere at the Burrow was somewhat strained. Her stomach did a nervous flip-flop at the thought of what it would be like for her if she and Ron....
"What's wrong?"
When had Harry grown perceptive? "I was thinking about how long the lines are going to be. I should have made Ron return this for me." She waved the book. "Why would he think I'd care about race cars?"
Harry looked uncomfortable. "He still doesn't know much about Muggles. And, well, it was a book, and you're Hermione..."
Hermione laughed, but it sounded a bit shrill to her ears. After dating her for three years, Ron should have known her better.

The Saturday after Christmas should have been a day to relax. The holiday was over and Hermione still had two days left before she needed to be back at the Ministry. But it was tense at the Burrow, especially after Molly found out she'd returned Ron's present. Ron took it in stride; he never seemed to care whether Hermione liked the presents he got her. (Why had she bothered to think so hard about the Quidditch tickets she'd gotten for him?)
Harry had given her a sympathetic glance and diverted Molly into a discussion of Bill and Fleur's latest baby. Hermione would have to thank him for that later.
Ron cradled his niece, the infant giggling madly at his faces. Hermione leaned against the wall, suddenly faint. When she'd seen Ron with Victoire she'd taken pleasure in the thought that he might hold their child in his arms one day. But now...
Ron would make a good father. But Hermione didn't want to raise a child with him.

Hermione was frantically getting ready for the Ministry's New Year's Eve party. She'd worked later than she'd meant to on the latest Elf rights proposal, and of course doing her hair took forever, which was why she never bothered. And she had to admit, she'd been trying not to think about the party, because that meant thinking about Ron, and she hadn't decided what to do about him yet.
"'Mione? You ready yet?" Ron, already dressed in decent navy robes, poked his head into the bedroom.
Hermione bit back a sarcastic answer---she obviously wasn't going out naked, was she? "Almost."
"Better hurry! At this rate we won't get there in time for our midnight kiss."
The thought of standing in a roomful of people, pretending to love her boyfriend, kissing him with an empty heart, was chilling. Merlin, she didn't want to do this now, not like this. But the New Year was a time for beginnings, and there had to be an ending first. "Ron," she said, pulling on her dressing gown. "Sit down."

Hermione was still sitting in her dressing gown two hours later, when Harry showed up. "Hey," he said, sitting down next to her on the bed. "Ron's passed out on my couch."
She winced. "I could have had better timing."
"He was...rather surprised." Harry straightened his glasses. "And now I'm out of firewhiskey. Are you all right?"
"I'll be fine. It just feels weird, knowing that it's over. Aren't you going out tonight?"
Harry laughed. "And have the Prophet print an article about how the great Harry Potter was all alone on New Year's? No, I decided if I was by myself, I'd rather stay home and celebrate by going to bed early."
Hermione couldn't help but smile at his cheerfulness. Harry always knew how to make her happy.
