A New Year, Part 2, Harry/Hermione, PG
x-posted from LJ

(I am posting H/D tomorrow, I promise.)

Title: A New Year, Part 2
Pairing: eventual Harry/Hermione
Word Count: 318
Rating: PG
Notes/Summary: Hermione thinks the end of the year is a good time to break up with Ron. Ron disagrees. Harry's stuck in the middle. This part written for [info]awdt's prompt Give me what I want and no-one gets hurt.

Back to Part 1

"Give me what I want and no-one gets hurt," Wilkins snarled.

Harry rolled his eyes and glanced at Ron, but his partner was staring off into space. "Ron, pay attention," he whispered. "We can't let the hostages die."

Wilkins waited politely, watching Ron curiously, until Harry turned back to him. Then he said, "Looks like it's just you and me, Potter. No one's coming to---"

"Time!" the instructor called.

Wilkins cursed.

With a sigh of relief, Harry clapped him on the back and trudged away after Ron.

"Long day, huh?" Harry said cheerfully.

Ron barely glanced at him as they grabbed their bags and headed for the door of the training centre. Harry followed him. Looked like it would be another night of watching Ron drink himself to sleep, or of hexing him surreptitiously so he thought he'd drunk himself to sleep. Either way, Ron would be a numb lump in Harry's flat.

It had been two weeks since Hermione left him, two weeks of Ron sleeping on his couch, drinking cheap Muggle beer, and saying as little as possible.

"We're going out," Harry said abruptly.

Ron's steps faltered, but then he resumed his plodding with only a mumbled "Don't want to."

"I want to. Just to do something different. It'll be good for you."

Ron shrugged.

"Ron, come on. You can't go on like this forever."

His friend stopped and whirled around so fast that Harry nearly ran into him. "Can't I? What would you know about it? Look at you---you broke up with Ginny and act like she meant nothing to you! Well, mate, I loved Hermione. Get that through your head and leave me the fuck alone." He Apparated with a crack, leaving Harry alone on the pavement, wondering what in Merlin's name had just happened, and if Hermione would be able to help him make sense of it.
